Year 6 Leadership

Peace Pals

Empowered students…sustainable communities.
“Our touchstone is creating a healthy, peaceful, sustainable world through people teaching and learning together. Each of us bring unique perspectives and gifts, and it is by combining them that sustainable communities will be created. Many solutions will come from people working together intergenerationally, combining ancient wisdoms with new understandings. Solutions will also be found by working with nature and allowing nature to teach us. By learning together in practical ways, sustainability becomes an integral part of what we do throughout our schools and communities. Caring for our place and the whole planet becomes a living curriculum where schools can be catalysts for change”.

The Leadership in Sport programme has been successfully run for over 13 years at Waterloo School. It was originally designed to cater for Year 6 students who wanted to develop their leadership skills through sport. Students get the opportunity to experience a variety of activities ranging from sailing, cricket, and golf to gymnastics, nutrition and tennis skills.

Students also run lunchtime activities at school to develop their leadership skills.

Students are now running activities that benefit their peers and develop themselves as leaders around our school.

In 2019 we have expanded this to have leadership in coding, performing arts, literacy and art.

With the support of the Peace Foundation, through their ‘Cool School’ programme; we work to train student leaders as peer mediators. They are year 5 students who apply for the position in year 4. There is a lot of competition for the roles and it is hard to make the initial choice.

We believe participants will develop many skills; dealing successfully with conflict, active listening, and effectively questioning.

As we select our Peace Pals, we are looking for students who are good role models, responsible, reliable, and respectful. It is important that mediators selected live our Waterloo Values and are committed to this leadership role.

Dance Splash

Each year Wellington City Council holds a young people's art festival and part of this is dance performance. Dance Splash is an opportunity for students to participate in the whole experience of following a theme, being part of choreography, costuming and performing. They spend 2 terms working on their performance to be part of the Wellington Artsplash festival in term 3.

Coding Club

We have a coding club held by one of our teachers on a Friday lunchtime.
The students work through different coding exercises and follow a coding interest.
They also get the opportunity to look at the coding needed for robotics.

School Band

The school band is for Year 4-6 children to have the opportunity to be a part of a band and perform at our termly celebration assembly. It gives them the chance to perform to an audience, helps them gain confidence and encourages them to refine their social, cooperative and problem solving skills. They improve at playing their instruments.  Aspiring band members are required to audition and do need to have experience in playing their chosen instrument.

They spend 2 terms working on their performance to be part of the Wellington Artsplash festival in term 3. This year it is on Monday 18 September at 5.15pm

Tuakana Toa

Tuakana Toa is a leadership group for year 5 & 6 Maori students (although some students are also non-Maori). There is a short training programme which involves investigating what leadership is and the importance of te reo and tikanga Maori in our school. The tuakana students then have a teina class that they visit weekly on a Tuesday afternoon to teach te reo and tikanga. All year 1-3 classes have a tuakana toa leader attached to them.
