Year 3
Basic Facts
Each Monday the students are given a list of Basic facts to learn over the week, depending on the different stage they are working at. The students have all week to learn these Basic facts. The aim of this is to improve speed and accuracy of basic fact knowledge. You can support your child in learning these at home in a variety of ways. These include: written form, oral recall or using counting materials/number lines etc.
Multiplication/Division
It is expected that by the end of the year the students will be able to recall their multiplication and division facts for the 0,1,2,5 and 10 times tables. The students are given their tables to learn in which they have a couple of weeks to practise them. They are then tested on their tables and divided bys (dependent on what level they are at) before moving on to the next level. You can support your child at home by encouraging them to learn them each night as part of their basic facts homework.
Spelling
A list of words will come home each Monday. The students are expected to learn these words each night. On Friday the students are tested on this list of words. Learning their spelling words each week helps the students to be able to spell more words independently and include these words in their writing.
Reading
Students are expected to read every night Monday – Thursday. In their homework book the child or parent is required to write down what they have read each night as a record for monitoring. It is expected that the reading is signed by a parent each night. Reading books that are sent home during the week are books that the child can read independently with confidence and success. This could be a range of texts including:
Each Friday students are expected to take home their poetry book to share/discuss with you, and bring back to school the following Monday. Related to the poem is an activity that encourages the students to think about and respond to ideas discussed within the poem. These ideas are then presented in different ways for other people to view e.g. illustration, written.
