Emergency Procedures

At Waterloo School we are very aware of the danger of earthquakes, some of which will occur during school hours.  Fortunately, we regularly have drills and the students are well practised in STOP, COVER, HOLD.

In our policy we will only evacuate the school if the shake is so severe that we feel there may be damage and it is unsafe to stay.
If this occurs we will notify our parents via Signmee, School Website and answer phone, plus the Waterloo School Facebook page.
If at any point after a shake you are unsure what is happening, please check our website, answerphone or Facebook page as we will update these regularly.

When it is decided to evacuate we will hold ALL students at school until a suitable person arrives to collect them.  Please make sure you keep your emergency contact list and contact numbers up‐to‐date and that your child/ren are aware who will be most likely to collect them in an emergency.

Please remember in an emergency situation to NOT ring the school as it can be an issue ringing out on our phone lines if many parents are ringing to check on their children. We ask that you please ring only if there is a major problem getting someone to collect your child, in order to keep our phone lines free.

Evacuation procedure in an emergency
Any decision to send pupils home following an emergency must be made by the Principal or Acting Principal. In the event of any earthquake or emergency, where students are evacuated from the classroom,
ALL students will remain at school until collected by an adult. In reaching this decision consideration shall be given to the following:
  • Pupils will not be released until it is safe
  • Pupils will be kept at school until collected by their parent, caregiver or nominated custodian whose name and phone number will be recorded upon collection.
  • Pupils will not be left to find their own way home Any child whose parents or guardians are unable to collect them must be held at school
  • If the buildings are deemed safe then the students will be kept in these areas:
    • Juniors in Rooms 17‐19
    • Middles in Rm 9 ﴾Rm 9 – Ako Ngatahi﴿
    • Seniors in South block (Rm 5)
If the school is not safe ALL students will be kept on the field until collected.
